Cune Barrel Fermented Rioja Blanco

€7, Tesco (reduced to clear)

As Tesco are getting rid of this stuff it may be hard to find; on the other hand, if it’s being cleared because it’s not selling, it may be in every store. In any case, it’s a snip; Waitrose have it currently at £10.49.

It’s the Viura grape (sometimes called Macabeo) and it’s proper, traditional white Rioja in that it’s not shy about oak. It will also age well for at least five years and I find it has the faintest suggestion of Riesling about it. Crisp but with a certain toasty nuttiness, it’s bone dry, almost austere and beautifully elegant. It’s just neither well known, as wines styles go, not understood in this market which is a shame. But, on the plus side, it’s a helluva of wine for €7.
